Internet and Phones

Parents and carers, along with children, need to be aware of the safety issues when using the internet or mobile phones.

Regrettably, a lack of awareness can sometimes lead to a lack of safety. This is an area where parents can often feel worried, particularly if they are not too confident in the technology themselves.

The following links provide helpful advice and support:

Parental Controls for mobile phones is a document by OFCOM with advice on how mobile phones can be made safer, and contains many useful links to further information.

The Thinkuknow website is part of the police’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and has very practical advice for parents regarding grooming, mobiles, gaming, social networking and chat.

Chatdanger is another useful website by Childnet International, a non-profit organisation working with others to “help make the Internet a great and safe place for children”.

If you need to report something then please see this page of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

The following video details how to change Facebook settings in order to get maximum privacy: this is something worth considering, particularly for young people, in order to limit who can access information and send messages, etc. It is best viewed full screen (click on the bottom right of the video).
