Ever looked at a successful business idea and thought to yourself "Why didn't I think of that"? This GCSE course gives you the opportunity to pursue the answer to this question and others like what makes a business successful and how do businesses grow from small businesses into multinational companies. You will study all the main areas of business activity including, the business environment, marketing, accounting and finance, human resources, and production. The course therefore provides a good basis both for employment, and further study.

What will you study?

The course is set in the context of 3 units of study:

Unit 1:  Introduction to Small Business

Unit 2:  Controlled assessment (an investigation into a small business of your choice)

Unit 3:  Building a Business


Trips and visits to support the curriculum

  • Year 9 visit to Madame Tussauds (branding and marketing)
  • Year 10 visit to London (Harrods versus the corner shop)
  • Year 11 visit to London (business in the capital at Christmas)

  • You are most likely to have success in this course if you like researching information, enjoy programmes such as Dragons Den and The Apprentice, think that finding out about new things in interesting and challenging, and want to increase your employability skills or go on to further study.
