Year 9 WorkSkills Volunteers
On Thursday 7th July, some of the Year 9 WorkSkills group ventured to Capstone Country Park in Gillingham, where they had the opportunity to experience volunteering for the first time.
The five students were accompanied by Mr Kent and Mr Brennan. On arrival the group were quickly presented with their first challenge; removing the Ragwort from a field. One student quickly identified the importance of removing this weed in the countryside 'it is poisonous to horses'. With a greater understanding, the group went straight onto the task and quickly cleared the immediate area. Students continued to work hard and cleared the field with 30 minutes.
The second task allowed students to use a bow saw in order to cut down some small trees that were also placed within the same field. The students tackled this task with a lot of enthusiasm and collectively cleared the trees that the park rangers wanted removed.
The students found the experience hard work but were pleased to see the impact they had made on the field. The groups is now looking forward to returning to Capstone Country Park next week, to gain more experience in volunteering.
