Senior Citizen’s Tea Party

image

On the 13th of October, the sixth form Business Diploma group held a Senior Citizens Event called “Blue Suede Shoes” as part of a course unit.

The event was a successful day in which the business students provided the elderly people with food, entertainment, raffle and bingo all free of charge and completely run by sponsors.

“Blue Suede Shoes” was organised completely by sixth form business students. The students were expected to collect sponsors, invite clients, organise entertainment, decorate the hall and present the overall event. Each student chose a particular job role when organising the event and was in charge of a certain area throughout. The business teacher in charge (Mrs Spry) said “The students were a credit to the school”.

The event went very smoothly and the students were all enthusiastic to get involved and to interact with the elderly people. The students are very proud of their achievement. Students said “Organising an event has given them an insight into what organising an event in the work place is really like and what it entails”

The senior citizens who attended the event commented on how much they enjoyed the event. One of the attendee said “I have a different view on young people now”. This was really encouraging for the students and was a good reflection on the way the students treated the elderly people. There were a number of people who wanted to write to the school and press, to inform them of the lovely time they had at Strood Academy. “Can we come again next week?” was the general feedback at the end of the event.

The event consisted of entertainment provided by students within the school. Sophie Henderson and Jasmine Phillips performed a contemporary dance duet. This was followed by the Glee club performing two songs from Glee and the entertainment finished off with Hannah Dewey performing two classical songs. These acts were greatly enjoyed by the senior citizens. “This school is full of talent” was one of the comments from the senior citizens when the entertainment had finished.

The students were very grateful for the companies that were willing to sponsor the event. These included: Morrisons, Greggs, Absolutely Ravenous, Tesco, John Lewis, Hallmark, Beaneys Bakery, Happy Shopper, Camille, Valley Drive Dental Practice and Greengrocers Higham.

Among the helpers on the day of the event was Karen Byrne, Amy Webster and Nicole Wood who belong to the Health and Social care group. They were also a credit to the school. They assisted the senior citizens on the day of the event, making sure their day was as comfortable as possible. The business class were very appreciative of the extra help provided by the sixth form students on the day of the event. Conor Chipperfield and Chloe Blackall voluntarily helped out on the day of the event, which was also fully appreciated by the business students.
