On Wednesday 2nd March, 29 year 10 student s studying GCSE Art went to the UCA Rochester campus. The aim of the visit was to give them a taste of life at university and what they could study if they decided to go to university.

The students were put into group and taster sessions were arranged for the morning and afternoon.

Some of the workshops they attended were:

Tie Dye – Some of the T shirts that the students produced were outstanding. It was not as easy as it seemed, they to tie the T shirt very tightly so that the dye did not run. The workshop leader was impressed with some of the results, he said that they were the quickest group he’d had and had to set scarf printing as an extra activity.

Silk scarf printing – this was quite difficult as they had to pleat the scarf very tightly before they dyed them. The results were really good and the students were pleased with the effect. Even the boys were enthusiastic and desperately wanted to keep their scarves.

Print making -The students proved to be very inventive in this, they produced some good prints

Photography – Using a biscuit tin the students took photographs from around the university and then took them to a dark room to print. It looked very strange seeing the students walking around with their tins telling us that they were their cameras. Some of the photographs were amazing.

Fashion drawing. The students seemed to thrive in this workshop. They were all very impressed with their own efforts they were given templates with see through paper. They had to trace the model and then design the clothing on top. The lecturer was impressed with the results.

The feedback from the students was very positive, they said they enjoyed the day and felt proud of their efforts in all of the workshops.

The associate team at the UCA was extremely pleased with what the students had achieved in the workshops and their behaviour.
